You've probably heard of IPL hair removal - but what does it mean, and how does it work? IPL stands for Intense, Pulsed Light. It's a technique the beauty industry shares with dermatology. It differs from laser treatment, in that where laser light is a coherent beam of light of a single frequency, IPL uses pulses of broad-spectrum light. The beam can be "tuned", though, to target different kinds of hair. IPL hair removal works when the beam strikes the follicles, encounters the melanin of which they are largely composed, causes them to heat up, and consequently destroys them.

IPL hair removal is a great way of bringing about a permanent reduction in the growth of hair - particularly of the coarser hair typically found under the arms, on the legs and sometimes between the eyebrows. Here are some important things to note about IPL hair removal treatment:

    • It is a great way to enormously and permanently reduce the growth of undesirable hair, but it will not eliminate it entirely
    • At any time, only some of our follicles are active, and because IPL hair removal targets only the active follicles, a course of several IPL treatments is required to achieve the desired growth reduction.
    • Because IPL hair removal targets the melanin in the darker hair follicles, it is only an effective treatment for people with light-to-medium skin types.
    • IPL hair removal should only be used on skin that is in good health, clean, shaved and free of sunburn. Some health conditions are contraindications for its use.

Your Revive Day Spa therapist is trained in all aspects of IPL hair removal, and will examine you thoroughly before commencing treatment.
